Have you ever eaten at a phenomenal BBQ joint and wondered if you could recreate that taste at home? I don’t know many people that would turn down a perfectly smoked brisket or pulled pork. After many years of eating at my favorite BBQ joints or relying on my minimal culinary skills, I have finally combined my 2 favorites, cattle and BBQ.
Ever since I can remember I’ve had a passion for cattle. I just think they are the most versatile and useful animal God ever created. From supporting my leather business, to hauling milk, to raising my own beef.
What Changed?
A few years ago we purchased a Pit Boss pellet grill. It changed my life! My only cooking skills were on a grill anyway and even those were minimal. Within the first project on the pellet grill I was changed into a smoker snob.
Now, I told you earlier what a passion I have for cattle. And now with the Pit Boss pellet grill, I have combined 2 of my favorites. I now have the ability to start my mouth watering brisket literally from birth.
It has been a long process but in 2020 we finally got to see/eat what we had been working towards for 5 years. We purchased a heifer and a bull in 2016 and started from there. I’m sure you already read about that story in “How To Start Out On Your Own.” So last year we finally got the steer we had been looking forward to for so long, butchered.
Why Is It Phenomenal BBQ?
It may sound weird or morbid but, there is nothing more satisfying than eating the fruits of you labor, literally eating it. I don’t claim to be a homesteader or living off the grid, however it’s nice to know if anything ever happens my family and I can provide for ourselves.
The Pit Boss has made it so much easier for me to turn my home-grown beef into phenomenal BBQ. Before the pellet grill I was limited to burgers and steaks on my trustee gas grill. Since the gas grill rusted out and the addition of the pellet grill, I have smoked and grilled just about anything imaginable. I mean, I’ve done the classic brisket and pulled pork to a smoked prime rib for Christmas. Smoked hams and even smoked bologna, just about anything you can imagine.
Between my beef and the Pit Boss, there’s always a reason for friends and family to gather at the ranch. My oldest brother raises feeder pigs along with registered Hereford cattle. Plus some of our good friends feed hogs also, with their quality pork and my beef, there’s no reason to go hungry here.
I never thought replacing my old gas grill would change our meals so much! Who would’ve ever known it would even invigorate my passion for cattle even more.
